A record of 35 NCMD members visited Tampere in Finland for the ninth Euromit meeting on mitochondrial pathology. With around 750 participants it was the biggest Euromit to date. The meeting was excellently organised by Professors Howy Jacobs and Anu Suomalainen and featured a good balance between young and old talents, clinic, diagnostics and research.
The NCMD was actively involved with a co-organiser, a session chair, three speakers and 18 poster presentations. Special feature was the Young Mitoscientist Forum prior to the main scientific program, with an unexpectedly high participation. In addition Euromit 2014 for the first time featured a parallel program for patients and caregivers, during which Imelda de Groot gave a clear presentation on her work on rehabilitation in mitochondrial disorders. In the main program Martijn Huijnen presented his work on the role of CBP4 ortholog UQCC3 in the function of complex III. Jan Smeitink had the honor of presenting the final talk, which was about the path of scientific discovery to drug development at Khondrion, resulting in a stimulating final discussion about the barriers and facilitators in orphan drug
development. The program is still online, for this go to the Euromit 2014 website.
