11/7/17 - RCMM Retreat: Dr. Peter Willems receives RCMM Achievement Award
Scientists and care professionals of the Radboud Center for Mitochondrial Medicine gathered at Gasterij de Arend in Winssen for the 2017 RCMM retreat. The aim of the day was to evaluate the center’s strategy and to define actions to help implement it.
The morning program featured the personal story of Frank Alsemgeest, who turned the devastating experience of losing his son to mitochondrial disease into hope and action by starting the ROAd4energy foundation and organizing the mountain bike charity event Groesbeeks Gruwelijkste. Second speaker of the morning session was Prof. dr. Hub Zwart, who triggered a lively discussion about translating fundamental high-quality research into societal relevance.
Sunny weather facilitated a wonderful outdoor lunch at the orchard across from the venue. Following lunch, the afternoon program was aimed at interdisciplinary interaction. Through four rounds of table discussion four questions were addressed regarding setting up and prioritizing goals of the RCMM, and in translating them into action.
The day was concluded with presentation of the RCMM Achievement Award to Dr. Peter Willems, who was caught by complete surprise when his family appeared to witness the event. Prof. dr. Jan Smeitink lauded Peter for his unrelenting efforts and impressive achievements regarding both research and teaching in the area of mitochondrial health and disease.
